No. My parents didn't do Santa when we were little- and they told us he wasn't real. Once we understood that concept they pretended to give us presents from Santa, but we knew it was from them (however, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that wanted so much for Santa to be real... lol). Jeff and I plan on telling our children that Santa isn't real. We don't mind if so and so gives him/her a gift saying it's from Santa, because they will know it's just pretend. But it's important to us to be truthful with our children because we will be teaching them about God throughout their life... and we don't ever want them wondering if we're lying or pretending about God/Jesus too.
Note: When I was in 5th grade, Mom pulled me aside at her apartment and told me Santa wasn't real. I thought we all understood this concept, but suddenly realized my mom thought that I thought Santa WAS real, so I had only a split second to make a very important decision. I decided to let her think I was disappointed by the news, because she had such a serious and sad expression on her face. So... I "took the Santa isn't real" news hard.
ReplyDeleteBut really??? C'mon, Mom! What made her think I THOUGHT Santa was real? Maybe I was good at pretending he was? Don't know...
Thought I'd share that funny memory.
so, did your parents come right out and say it, or did they just not ever mention santa? we haven't put much emphasis on santa, but ev.er.y.one. else does, so i'm finding it's hard to escape it. what did they say to you or the other person when someone stooped down to your child height and said something like, "are you excited for santa to come?", etc?
ReplyDeleteSarah's oldest sister was a little girl with her mom in the check-out line of a store when the clerk asked what she wanted from Santa, and was surprised when the answer was, "We are celebrating Jesus' birthday!"
ReplyDeleteMole- I love your story. :) That's hilarious.
ReplyDeleteKirsten- I emailed you some info.
Daddy- A similar thing happened with me when I was little AND when I had Evie at a store when she was about 4... only thing is I think I just told the clerk that Santa wasn't real. And Evie just kept asking why a lady would ask about Santa... "Doesn's she know he's not real!?!" And of course, being the wonderful auntie that I am- I burst into laughter. Oops.
