I Am an Elephant

When a friend of mine (the same friend I mentioned in the Abby Cadabby post) heard that we had finally decided to go with ECFA for our adoption, and when she knew that we had an appointment to meet with the adoption coordinator there, she told me something kind of funny...

Actually, she invited me to the moms group at church. I told her I'd feel funny being there since I don't have kids, I'm not pregnant, and I don't really forsee any children in my near future. To this, she replied:

"Well, most women have a pregnancy. Because we don't get pregnant, and we adopt instead, then our adoption process is our pregnancy stage. Just consider yourself an elephant, because they have a really long gestation period."

Thanks, Steph, for calling me an elephant. (ha ha ha...)

I ignored her. (Surprise surprise, right? I'm stubborn like that.) Not only did I not take her up on the invitation to mom's group, but I didn't want to be an elephant or even have a "pregnancy" right now. Nothing felt "normal" and nothing felt "real."

But you know what? Some time has gone by since then, and I think I am an elephant. And I think I do have a "pregnancy" or a really long gestation period. Weird as it might sound to you... I feel like it! Not like I'm as big as an elephant, or as bumpy or rough skinned. I'm also not giving birth... to a human or an elephant. But I have the excitement and I find myself day dreaming about it a lot, like one would if she were carrying a baby. It's kind of a neat feeling.

I just wish I had a due date... (LOL!)

  1. Well... Here's a due date: February 18, 2010. The elephant might come early or be a few months late. We'll see!!!! (But now you have a due date.) :) I know, I know... SOP.

You know what I thought when I saw the title? My a cow.

Love you, Jeff and Baby L.F. Aunt (Maybe my niece/nephew will be an author and have L.F. Aunt be his/her pen name!).

  2. I choose Feb 7, of course. You could name the baby Kirsten or Mason!
You could be a horse--they are pregnant for a year! But if an elephant's time is shorter, I'd take that. In one of our congregations during college, anyone and everyone was invited to the "mom's group". Still fun for all.
I love your quote from the Straight Story. Had to watch that and write a paper on it once.
